"I was like…pig’s feet? Now that’s something I would never eat, but if it’s the fountain of youth I’ll do it."
“I’m ridiculous about how dedicated I am to buying the food that I want. I find that the older I get the more food I end up packing in my suitcase when I travel. I carry around my own salt! I wasn’t planning on buying anything today but came to the market anyways. I saw this lettuce and thought it was so beautiful, and I had never seen anything like it before. I always like trying new things. Strange vegetables and strange parts of animals. I have become more confident on how to cook them too. Once I was looking up a recipe for sweetbreads and I saw an article on how pigs feet and eating them was like the fountain of youth. I was like, pig’s feet? Now that’s something I would never eat but if it’s the fountain of youth I’ll do it.
The thing is, pigs feet smell incredibly disgusting when they are cooking. So in the recipe I found for them, I had them in a slow cooker, you know, in my tiny apartment. At 3:00 AM, I awoke to the most wretched smell. I had to go sleep at a friend’s house the smell was so horrible. I was driven out of my apartment by pig’s feet. In the end they tasted delicious. The trick is convincing someone to let you cook them outside on their deck where you can get some fresh air.”← Back to basket diaries
